What are the tasks of test engineers?
Test engineers play an important part in product development.
They ensure that products fulfil the high quality demands which are made of them, and provide a positive user experience.
They usually look after the following tasks:
- Test planning and implementation
- Error detection and documentation
- Performance of test result analyses
- Quality assurance
- Test automation for improved efficiency and repeatability of the test processes
- Close collaboration and communication with developer teams

What can test engineers specialise in?
Test engineers can specialise in different areas and specialist areas which match their individual interests and career goals. Test engineers can expand their specialist knowledge and improve their career opportunities in their preferred areas by concentrating on specific areas.
The type of specialization can certainly differ. Some test engineers specialize in certain types of testing, such as function testing, performance testing or security testing. Others concentrate more on specific systems, industries or specialist areas.
For test engineers who are passionate about mechanical and mechatronic systems, for example, a specialization in mechanical engineering and mechatronics could be the right way to go.
Working as a test engineer focussing on Advanced Driver Assistance Systems (ADAS) would also be a possibility. In this area, engineers have the opportunity to work on the testing of driver assistance functions, for example, which are intended to improve driving safety and efficiency.
It may also be interesting to specialize as a test automation specialist. Engineers can further develop their skills in developing and implementing automated test scripts and test frameworks in this area and work in companies specialising in automated testing solutions.
Which requirements should development engineers bring with them?
Certain prerequisites and skills are advantageous in order to succeed as a test engineer.
As well as strong analytical skills, solid technical understanding is particularly important, and even though you don't have to be a programmer to be a test engineer, at least basic programming knowledge is an advantage.
Important soft skills in everyday work as a test engineer include good communication skills, the ability to work in a team and flexibility, for example, since test engineers often have to adapt to new technologies or test methods.
What career opportunities are available for test engineers?
Test engineers have a wide range of career opportunities in various industries. Be it in IT, finance, e-commerce, telecommunications, healthcare, the automotive industry or the chemical industry - their expertise is needed everywhere. The increased use of digital technologies has also increased the need for experienced test engineers. New technologies such as augmented reality (AR) or virtual reality (VR) have opened up exciting work areas for aspiring test engineers.
Test engineers can also take the path into development and research, and concentrate on the further development of test methods and new technologies. In this area they can explore new approaches, develop best practices and make a contribution to the evolution of the testing industry.
As the importance of quality and reliability in product development increases, so has the need for qualified test engineers. This offers very promising prospects for a successful career in this area.
